  7. Problem
  8. ------- 
  9. A "Trojan horse" program has been circulating that sets the password of
  10. PostScript LaserWriters to a value other than the default "0" -- preventing
  11. printing with Apple's driver.  It does not duplicate itself like a virus,
  12. and is not widespread, but can be embedded in any PostScript code being
  13. sent to a LaserWriter.

  16. Symptoms
  17. --------
  18. The printer's name appears in the Chooser dialog box, but when someone
  19. tries to print, the error message "Invalid Access" may appear.  If the
  20. Print Monitor is in use, the error message "Job cannot be printed, but the
  21. document is OK" may appear.

  24. Solution
  25. --------
  26. Apple Support is providing a utility program that resets the password of
  27. PostScript LaserWriters to the default "0".  This allows users to again
  28. access the printer.  If a customer experiences the above symptoms, use 
  29. this utility before deciding to replace the LaserWriter's controller 
  30. board.

  32. If a customer definitely has this problem, give them a copy of the utility,
  33. but ask that they not distribute the utility further, as it will cause
  34. problems for some customers who restrict access to the printer by setting
  35. the password to something other than "0".
  36.  
  37. A second utility searches a volume for all PostScript files containing 
  38. the "set password" code.  Once these files are identified,the offending 
  39. files can be removed.

  41. To locate these utilities, search the Technical Info library with the 
  42. search string "LaserWriter and Trojan horse".
